What are the effects of pollution on people?
Pollution causes many threats to the human population. Of the three major types of pollution, air, water, land, each have very different effects on people.
Of all of the types of pollution, air has the most detrimental effects on people. Air pollution creates particles that float around in the air, which can cause many health issues. The results of the particles depend mostly on how long someone exposes their self and the type of chemicals involved in the particles If people are only exposed to air pollution for a short time they may experience irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, and upper respiratory problems such as bronchitis and pneumonia, headaches, nausea, and allergic reactions. If people tend to expose themselves to the pollution for a longer amount of time, they may develop lung cancer, heart disease, and damage to the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys.

One of the major factors contributing to air pollution is vehicle emission. Car exhausts contain a significant number of toxic substances, which are released in the air and contribute to the amount of particles floating around. Vehicles generate more than one-third of all U.S. carbon dioxide emissions and 30 percent of America’s total global warming emissions. Every gallon of gas burned emits around 25 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global warming gases into the atmosphere. The average car emits 7 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. With this occurring, climate is disrupted and our food and water supply is at risk.

Water pollution is primarily responsible for disrupting the natural food chain of aquatic animals. When small fishes eat the pollutants in the water, this ends up affecting the bigger fish and eventually affecting the humans eating the fish. People can end up getting diseases such as hepatitis from eating the fish that have been poisoned. Many countries are affected by water pollution because they rely on the waters for drinking. By drinking contaminated water, many people develop cholera and diseases.

Land pollution can also cause many problems for people. The contaminated land can cause problems in the human respiratory system, problems on the skin, and various kinds of cancers. The toxic materials that pollute the soil can get into the human body by coming into contact with skin, being washed into water sources, and eating fruits and vegetables that were grown in soil that was polluted, or just by breathing in the polluted particles.
